Garment Reconstruction
I ordered this amazing coat off ThreadFlip.com and wasn’t exactly sure how well it would fit. When it finally arrived I tried it on and it was, to put it simply, way too big. The coat just looked ridiculous and ill-fitting. So, I took it in to the best tailor in Los Angeles, (in my opinion) at Bubbles Dry Cleaners in Hollywood, and we started pinning and pinching. He wasn’t sure what to do with the extra fabric and didn’t want to cause an odd bump by not taking it in all the way to the hem… however I loved how full the skirt was and didn’t want to loose circumference. So, I had the idea to basically create pleats with the excess fabric…. so this became a complete garment reconstruction… Now- I have mentioned it before, and I’ll say it again… if you have an idea, if you know what you want, tell your tailor, ask and ask, and keep pinning and tucking until you both agree that it will come out perfectly and it’ll be to both of your satisfactions.. He took it in between the shoulders, all the way down the back, both sides of the waist, under the arms, and even part of the hood. The result however, is better than fantastic, which makes buying vintage for cheap, and investing in a perfect fit, sooo worth it… assuming I don’t fluctuate too much in weight, I will own this coat for the rest of my life. That… is a great deal. Roger definitely doesn’t think I’ll have this for the rest of my life, but I have always wanted to be able to give my future daughters and granddaughters some beautiful items… in like, 40 years..I can’t help it, items like this hold a place in my heart!
