Life Is Beautiful Festival:
October 21-23 in Las Vegas was the Life Is Beautiful Festival which I attended with Bacardi to help promote their “The future doesn’t suck” campaign. Essentially they asked people to take the straw free pledge to make a better world. in America we use 500,000,000 plastic straws PER DAY. That’s enough to fill 125 school buses! The worst part is that straws are too small and light to be recycled which means 100% will end up in a landfill or the ocean.
When the straws make it to the ocean the salt water and sun help to break them into smaller pieces which will absorb toxins. Eventually, some type of fish or bird will eat the pieces. When animals ingest plastic they absorb the toxins trapped within them, feel full when they’re not, and eventually die of starvation. If they don’t die and are instead caught for human consumption, of course, we end up eating the plastic and toxins which are poisonous. Chemicals in plastic have been linked to cancer, infertility, hormone disruption and more.
Basically straws are bad and most of the time totally unnecessary. So, Bacardi and The Lonely Whale have joined forces to eliminate 1 billion plastic straws by 2020. In addition, Bacardi announced a commitment to review its global supply chain, with the aim of removing non-essential, non-recyclable single-use plastic waste. (Hopefully, the cups are next!)
This is huge and something you know I have been working toward for months! So please, take the pledge to refuse single-use plastic straws here!
