Why Gratitude is so Important
Happy Thanksgiving! Gratitude has become an afterthought in many people’s lives and I find it to be so unfortunate. There are a ton of reasons why gratitude is so important but I want to share my personal experience with understanding this emotion and how my life changed once I started to put it into practice.
Rewind to about a year ago. I was jobless, other than my blog which wasn’t full time yet, not sure where I’d be living in the following month, single, and lonely. I had picked up my life, left my boyfriend of 5+ years and moved to the desert alone. Once alone in Las Vegas, I had to go back to a job I hated (Bottle service) to support myself. After only two months though, I left it because well, I hated it.
Becoming depressed , one day it hit me, I had an opportunity. I could recoil and sink lower or I could move forward and see where it would take me. I started to count my “assets” if you will. It was important to know what I really had to be able to set goals for what I wanted. As I listed things I had, I began to feel grateful for them. Each day I would look at my list and reflect deeply on one of the items listed.
Putting Gratitude Into Practice
I decided to put my newfound gratitude out in the world as my facebook statuses. One day writing, “Today I am grateful for my friends. 3 years ago I didn’t have many friends. I was so depressed and I am not religious but I would literally pray every day and night for a best friend. Then Laura Yazdi emailed me asking me to lunch and through her and blogging I met Elizabeth Keene. Now I have two amazing Bffs who I can tell anything to, always laugh with and depend on. So blessed!! #grateful2016”
Another day I wrote, “Today I am grateful for my health. Not only do I look healthy but I can run, jump, eat whatever I want and not worry about anything. It’s so amazing. How did I get so lucky?! #grateful2016”
Each day wasn’t a big thing, some days I was thankful for my new pillow cases or my favorite hummus from Trader Joes. As I noticed things I was grateful for each day I felt much happier, I got new opportunities, I attracted money to me with jobs and winning while gambling. When I played craps I said “Thank you” or “Preash” which is my word for “I appreciate it it” every time I won any bet, even if it was only a five dollar win. I won more. I truly believe in the law of attraction and if you’re always saying how grateful you are you will continue to attract positive things to you.
On top of just bringing more to me, I seemed to gain new perspective as if I was starting to see the world through rose-colored glasses. When something would go wrong I’d be grateful for all the things I still had which made taking losses easier and rebounding come faster. I woke up each day happier than the day before and excited to see what new things I’d be grateful for that day.
