Matachica Resort Review and Belize Photo Diary

Matachica Resort Review:

If you’re planning on heading to Belize anytime soon, you have to stay at Matachica Resort. Secluded on Ambergris Caye just north of San Pedro it’s a perfect oasis of relaxation and adventure.

Arrival:

After a short 2 hour flight to Belize City and then a 10-minute flight on a small, puddle-jumper type plane to San Pedro. The journey wasn’t over yet, we then had a short golf cart ride to the dock where we’d need to catch a boat to our resort. It may sound like a lot but the airline and Matachica staff handled everything with grace and efficiency. All I had to do was smile and record stories :)

Arriving at the resort by boat was pretty cool actually, we got to have kind of a grand entrance as we walked down the long dock toward the lobby where we were checked in and greeted with welcome drinks. We were informed that there is no tipping on the property as there is an automatic 15% gratuity added to each check and, “the staff knows so to please not worry about tipping.” Which was nice that they reiterated and made it a point to say because that way there was no confusion when it came time to sign the check!

Rooms:

After Check-in we were shown to our room. The Tangerine room which had an ocean view, a matching hammock and was second to the left of the lobby was so cute! Little towel animals and shapes and flower petals on the bed were a nice touch. Realistically, would it really be a tropical vacation if there weren’t animal shaped towels? The filtered water pitcher refreshed daily was another amenity. Y’all know how much I love my water and I LOVED that it wasn’t offered in single-use plastic bottles.

We switched rooms on the last day because our room was booked (we knew that ahead of time and offered to move rooms so we could stay there as our reservation was kind of last minute.) Our second room was much larger and I think, newer. I loved both rooms for different reasons so don’t worry, whatever room you stay in, it will be clean, adorable and it will have a chic matching hammock out front.

Activities:

At any time you can take out a kayak or go snorkeling, or of course, lay by the pool or beach. It was pretty windy every day we were there except one which was kind of nice because the breeze helped us to not overheat. If you get tired of the wind on the dock you can switch to the pool. I loved the outdoor shower and the fact that they always kept the ice water pitcher full. You can order food or drinks at either spot and both were really nice! I think Jacques preferred the dock because it was cooler. The day beds on the dock, by the way, are a perfect place to watch the sunset. (Tell Archie I said hi!)

We also took advantage of the tours and booked the sunset snorkeling tour at Turtle reef and the Day trip snorkeling tour. The sunset tour was probably my favorite part of the trip. I could watch the sunset every day for the rest of my life and love it each time. I also love being in the water (i’m a mermaid yo) and this spot lived up to its name because we got to swim with a little sea turtle and it was just as magical as it sounds.🐢

Food:

The hotel only has one restaurant called “Mambo” but it had a good selection and they were extremely accommodating to all my crazy modifications. My favorite breakfast was the western omelet and I ordered it almost every day. Make sure you ask for the hot sauce because it was AWESOME! I also loved guacamole with GG crackers instead of chips (yes I brought my own to save a few calories) and ceviche with no cucumbers. (I hate cucumbers.) For dinner, I loved the calamari and I tried a new special every day. The fish was always so fresh and our Christmas dinner was so delicious!

Drinks:

I also loved the fact that they had a large selection of dessert and coffee drinks. We enjoyed drinks before dinner almost every night while we played a game of chess. (Their chess set is missing a few pieces, so, bring them a new set if you go.) Each day at the pool we sipped on rosé and I was pleased to find out that they had two selections of rosé… so many places even in the states only have one option so I was really happy, to say the least. (I preferred the drier Italian version, FYI.)

Service:

Of course, the service was impeccable. Archie, Alfredo, Christina and the rest of the staff were all so friendly and kind. They always did their best to fulfill a need before we even had to ask.

I would definitely recommend Matachica and hope I can go back and see everyone again!

Thank you Matachica for partnering on this post.
